Taking on the USA auto safety industry

Ben Hamilton-Baillie spoke in Washington DC at the Edmunds Auto Safety Conference on Tuesday May 26th. His paper on the value of ambiguity, intrigue, surprise and the creative use of risk in street design challenges conventional safety initiatives such as government regulation and control, traffic signals, seat-belt legislation, air-bags and expensive safety equipment. His conclusion that "Most accidents are good things..." raised eyebrows amongst the Washington safety industry, which is only just beginning to understand risk compensation.
